From Bean to Cup: Colm's Unforgettable Journey to Brazilian Coffee Farms

For any true coffee enthusiast, there's a magic that transcends the daily cup. It's the desire to understand the journey of that coffee bean, from a tiny green speck on a tree to the rich, aromatic brew in your hands. That's exactly what fueled our origin trip to Brazil, the heartland of coffee production.

We visited Alto Alegre Farm, where the legacy of coffee cultivation spans five generations, located in Minas Gerais, the farm’s optimal location, ideal climate, and fertile soil create the perfect conditions for growing Arabica coffee. Meeting the passionate family behind Alto Alegre Coffees, we explored the 520-hectare farm, dedicated to not only cultivating coffee but also preserving natural resources.

Here we could see the The Mundo Novo, Yellow Bourbon, and Catuaí varieties showcased the complexity and unique flavour profiles rarely found elsewhere up close.

Our journey continued with a meeting at Falcafé, a company with a clear mission to supply ethical, sustainable, and premium coffee. It was amazing to see the cutting-edge sustainability innovations, we participated in an amazing cupping session and we handpicking the freshest beans from the new harvest. The perfect beans, combining sustainability and flavour.

One particularly memorable experience was witnessing the sun-drying process. The vibrant red coffee cherries spread out on vast patios, basking under the warm Brazilian sun, was a sight to behold. The aroma – a sweet, fruity medley – was unlike anything we ever encountered.

But the journey wasn't all sunshine and picturesque landscapes. We also delved into the intricate processing methods, from the wet method (where the pulp is removed mechanically) to the natural method (where the cherries dry whole on the branch).

Beyond the coffee education, Brazil itself stole a piece of our heart. The warmth of the people, the vibrant culture, and the delicious cuisine made it an unforgettable experience.

This trip wasn't just about coffee; it was about about connection – to the land, the people, and the very essence of this beloved beverage. Every cup I brew now holds a deeper meaning, a story of dedication, passion, and the sunshine-soaked hills of Brazil.
